چکیده

Friction between dielectric surfaces produces patterns of fixed, stable electric charges that in turn contribute electrostatic components to surface interactions between the contacting solids. The literature presents a wealth of information on the electronic contributions to friction in metals and semiconductors but the effect of triboelectricity on friction coefficients of dielectrics is as yet poorly defined and understood. In this work, friction coefficients were measured on tribocharged polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), using three different techniques. As a result, friction coefficients at the macro- and nanoscales increase many-fold when PTFE surfaces are tribocharged, but this effect is eliminated by silanization of glass spheres rolling on PTFE. In conclusion, tribocharging may supersede all other contributions to macro- and nanoscale friction coefficients in PTFE and probably in other insulating polymers.

Electrostatic Charge Generation due to Shear Deformation of Pharmaceutical Powders

In powder handling operations, such as mixing, conveying, sieving and milling, particles frequently make contact with each other and the walls of the processing equipment. During these interactions, the electrification of particles takes place, commonly known as tribocharging. This paper focuses on investigating the tribocharging characteristics of bulk powders under shear deformation. In parti...

A theoretical study on the anomalous pressure dependence of the transport properties of ionic liquids: Comparison among lithium bromide, silica, and water

The transport coefficients of three ionic liquids, lithium bromide ~LiBr!, rubidium bromide ~RbBr!, and molten silica (SiO2) are calculated by the mixture mode-coupling theory. The static partial structure factors required are obtained from the interionic interaction potential by the Ornstein– Zernike/hypernetted-chain integral equation. The anomalous pressure dependence of the transport proper...

The Role of Friction in Mixing and Segregation of Granular Material

The process of size segregation in a model system of granular matter, consisting of 1600 spherical poly-disperse particles stirred by a rectangular bar moving periodically in the horizontal direction, was modelled by the discrete element method under different values of dynamic friction coefficient of the particle material. It has been shown that the dynamic friction coefficient influences the ...

Surface Micromachined Linear Electrostatic Stepper Motor - Micro Electro Mechanical Systems, 1997. MEMS ' 97, Proceedings, IEEE., Tenth Annual International

A linear electrostatic stepper motor has been designed and fabricated in a single mask surface micromachining process.. It consists of two drive units that alternately generate a step to move the shuttle. The friction and adhesion in the clamps has been measured. A friction coefficient of 0.8 * 0.3 have been found. The adhesion in the clamp is just low enough to release the clamping shoe. Stepp...

Nanoscopic friction under electrochemical control.

We propose a theoretical model of friction under electrochemical conditions focusing on the interaction of a force microscope tip with adsorbed polar molecules whose orientation depends on the applied electric field. We demonstrate that the dependence of friction force on the electric field is determined by the interplay of two channels of energy dissipation: (i) the rotation of dipoles and (ii...
